BVI WEATHER FORECAST
BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS CLIMATE
Best Time to visit:
The BVI climate is subtropical and tempered by trade winds, coming from the East (in general). There is little variation between summer and winter. Rainfall is low, varying slightly from island to island. Night-time temperatures drop to a comfortable level. Visitors should note that the British Virgin Islands are susceptible to hurricanes and earthquakes, although these are by no means a frequent occurrence.The peak tourist season is December to May, but this has more to do with the cold weather in North America and Europe.
Tempature:
July and August are the hottest months of the year with an average temperature of 82°F / 28 °C. September and October always feel hotter as there is less breeze to keep you cool. Coolest months are December – March with an average temperature of 78°F /25.5 °C and with more wind.
Precipitation:
Rainfall is the lowest in March, with an average of 46 mm. Our rain season is in September/October/November with an average of 140 mm per month, but rain normally come in 10 minute squalls.
Wind
During the winter months (November to January) the wind is from the northeast at 15-20 knots. The Christmas winds can produce 25-30 knots for several days at a time. In February, the winds move to the east and by June it changes to the southeast at 10-15 knots. In September and October, the trade winds are at their weakest and the weather can be less settled when tropical systems come through.
Sea Water
The sea is warm enough to swim in all year round, being about 26 °C (79 °F) in February and March and about 29 °C (84 °F) in September and October.
Hurricane Season:
The official hurricane season is from June to November, but realistically the chances on tropical systems or hurricanes are from half August till end of October. Please take in consideration when you book a charter in hurricane season, that your charter can be interrupted by bad weather, storms and even a hurricane. Most crewed yachts and restaurants / bars are closed for the season. The chances are still high that you have lovely weather, but we strongly recommend to purchase travel insurance in case a weather system does hit us (some yachts make travel insurance mandatory). The good thing about this time of the year is that it is quiet and you will easily find a snorkel spot or anchorage just for yourselves.
